This is a history and catalogue raisonné of the Waterford Municipal Art Collection – a hidden gems of the Irish art world. Illustrated with over 330 artworks, it offers a fascinating view of Irish painting from the 18th century to the present day. Founded by a public-spirited group of citizens in the late 1930s, it has grown over the years into a substantial body of works. Most of the major Irish artists active during this period are represented by fine examples of their work. Appropriately, there is also a unique collection of works produced locally, depicting the ancient city of Waterford and its surroundings. This fascinating book contains a personal memoir by Roy Foster, and a comprehensive essay by Peter Jordan setting out the history of the collection within the cultural context of the period of its formation and development.

As well as 55 full-page colour plates, carefully chosen to indicate the rich mix of local, national and international works, a full-colour catalogue section documents and illustrates the full 330 works in the collection, together with biographical details of the artists.

EXTRACT

"Waterford’s art collection, which has grown with the years and led a peripatetic existence, has now come to rest in Greyfriars [Municipal Art Gallery], and this fascinating history and catalogue marks the moment. This important and growing collection, and its developing profile in the cultural life of the city, represent a vital theme in Waterford’s history, which deserves celebration and appreciation. Peter Jordan’s book authoritatively provides both."
