The New Housing 2 (2009) is the RIAI / DoEHLG’s long-awaited follow-up to the bestselling The New Housing (2002). This 312-page full-colour hardback book features 116 key housing projects across Ireland, designed by 60 architectural practices. These projects endeavour to assess the wider community issues of housing such as integration with existing facilities; development of new towns and communities which provide for more sustainable lifestyles; small infill projects which help to regenerate areas; coherent strategies for developing small towns and villages.
With multiple authoratitive essays, architects’ descriptions and over a thousand illustrations, this is an essential book for every architect’s shelf and a clear and accessible overview for any interested reader.
EXTRACTS
"The collapse of the economy, crime wars in our cities, and failure to meet our Kyoto targets illustrate sharply that we are failing in all three areas of sustainable development – economic, social and environmental. A history of successful cities and small towns has been destroyed in the last forty years with increased use of the motor car. For several decades our towns and cities became the domain of lower-income groups and social housing, while those with larger incomes departed for suburbia and the countryside.
The last fifteen years of unprecedented boom has largely exacerbated the situation. In Dublin city, in spite of the major development of social housing in the suburbs, those living in the inner city remained Corporation tenants or private tenants in rooming houses. Until about 1990, no private housing was built in the inner city and the population was declining. The last decade has seen a major reverse in this process, with the inner-city population expanding, and extensive new private apartment developments, particularly in Docklands. Families with children are returning to the inner suburbs, and new schools are being built or old ones extended. This is a pattern we must encourage in all our cities and towns if the current decline is to be reversed.
With two-thirds of our population now living in our five main city regions, we need to discover patterns of urbanism which will attract people to live in towns again. People are already experiencing the problems of sprawl and badly planned suburban development, with long commuting distances and lack of facilities – shops, schools, recreational amenities and jobs – close to where they live. While this destructive trend has continued largely unabated, there are encouraging examples of good planning and urban development, some of which have won international recognition.
This book attempts to show best practice in housing and mixed-use development through schemes which are planned, under construction or completed. It follows the full range of urban planning, from villages and small towns, through the extension of towns and cities, to regeneration of existing towns and cities.
