EXTRACT
"Limerick is a city that defies definition. And is strangely undervalued. The same with art. Limerick city gives you surprise after surprise – from remnants of its food-producing past to present cultural treasures and a multitude of astounding personal undertakings. Do people really know, for instance, that there are around eight fabulous butcher shops within an area of a few blocks? And hundreds of small authentic retailers and merchants? Its centre is a rich combination of urban elements and enterprises, with huge potential. But it is only vaguely appreciated and partially exhausted by developments on the outskirts, heavily car-dependent. A city is its inhabitants and its fabric as well as the intricate operative negotiation between them. Whatever we construct, it brings consequences that will need to be handled and related to, often over a long time.
A persistent myth is that modern life and communication are increasingly non-material. But the technologies we rely on require a surprisingly vast material consumption. Also, our very thoughts have a physical base. The paradox seems part of the human condition. Perhaps the poetry of art will source its survival out of such ambiguities. Certitudes and preconceived ideas always risk confining our hope at breaking barriers – in life as in art. Thus art continues defying rumours and labels.
And so does Limerick. e v+ a 2010 invites you to a re-encounter Limerick and art. In eleven venues, spread throughout the city, you will see the work of 59 artists, from near and far, of all generations. Art has no age. Quality is all that matters. Many works have been especially made for e v+ a 2010, and some are entirely conceived for the spaces they are placed in. Others are the result of a process of encounter and negotiation with these spaces. Some artworks have travelled through snowstorms by sled to reach Limerick and you. A red thread runs through them all, spinning loosely around the triple meaning of the title of this year’s show."
