This comprehensive catalogue raisonné and history of a major Irish art collection includes illustrated entries for over 1,400 works from the 18th century to the present day. It includes sections on paintings, prints, sculpture, stained glass, decorative arts and ceramics, and also provides an immensely detailed chronological history of art and architecture in 19th-century Cork.

It is an invaluable work of reference ... The design, layout and extremely high quality of the reproductions are very commendable, and add greatly to the overall enjoyment of this most welcome publication.
— Wanda Ryan-Smolin, Irish Arts Review
The summary catalogue shines a light into hitherto dark corners, and reveals ... a great deal of the gallery’s holdings are undoubtedly of significant national interest ... an indispensable publication in the context of Irish art history.
— Aidan Dunne, Sunday Tribune
One may easily peruse this catalogue for pleasure, information and gain ... It merits congratulations all round.
— Ciarán MacGonigal, Irish Times
No other word but ‘exhaustive’ will do for this magnificent production. It is an excellent publication of the highest quality ... beautifully printed ... the pleasure of this book for the art lover is unquestionable.
— Books Ireland
A handsome volume ... an essential book for anyone interested in Irish art of the 19th and 20th centuries.
 — Brian Fallon, Irish Times
A fine book to browse in, full of erudition...
— Patrick Gallagher, Irish Independent

EXTRACT

"The first great strength of the Crawford Gallery lies in its collection of nineteenth-century sculpture and painting including works by Hogan, Heffernan, Maclise, McDonald, Brenan and many other artists associated with the city and the School of Art during that period ... A second key area of the Crawford Gallery’s collection is represented by those works purchased by means of the Joseph Stafford Gibson Bequest of 1919. This collection is distinct and remarkable, in that it includes extremely fine paintings of the Newlyn School (Frank Bramley, ‘Lamorna’ Birch, etc.) and other, generally academic, British painters of the early part of the twentieth century."  — Peter Murray
